John 4

The Disciples Rejoin Jesus

27 Just then his disciples returned and were surprised to find him talking with a woman. But no one asked, “What do you want?” or “Why are you talking with her?”

28 Then, leaving her water jar, the woman went back to the town and said to the people, 29 “Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?” 30 They came out of the town and made their way toward him.

31 Meanwhile his disciples urged him, “Rabbi, eat something.”

32 But he said to them, “I have food to eat that you know nothing about.”

33 Then his disciples said to each other, “Could someone have brought him food?”

34 “My food,” said Jesus, “is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work. 35 Don’t you have a saying, ‘It’s still four months until harvest’? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest. 36 Even now the one who reaps draws a wage and harvests a crop for eternal life, so that the sower and the reaper may be glad together. 37 Thus the saying ‘One sows and another reaps’ is true. 38 I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor.”

PRAYERS ASCENDING ON HIGH For Our Brethren Of All Faiths Throughout The World Suffering Persecution.

We pray in particular on behalf of our brothers and sisters in Syria, Iraq, Egypt, Libya and throughout the Mideast. The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

We were in D.C. for Rolling Thunder, and the Motorcycle Parade in Honor of The Vietnam Vets had gone beautifully the day before. The next morning we decided that it was a beautiful day, so why not go out for breakfast? Well, we rode and rode around Washington, trying to find a Dunkin Donuts, an IHOP, or a Waffle House, but such things didn't seem to exist in Our Nation's Capital. Round and round we rode, in an ever increasing circle, and soon found ourselves in the part of town that the tourists never see. Burned-out buildings lined the street, and later we found out that they were burned in the riots following the assassination of Martin Luther King and had never been fixed...and here it was 1995! The street grew more and more depressing, and, of course, there wasn't a Dunkin Donuts, IHOP, or Waffle House in sight. Suddenly I saw an elderly Black man crossing the street, against the lights and walking very slowly. I signaled Hubby to stop his bike, and the two us us halted to let him pass. Then I saw it! In the man's hands were a muffin and a cup of coffee!

"Excuse me, Sir," I said. "Can you tell me where you got that coffee and muffin?"

"At the Homeless Shelter." he replied.

Our hearts sank. "Oh." I muttered."We could never go THERE!"

The old man looked us up and down and said:

"It's OK. They'll accept ANYBODY!"

We found our way back to our hotel, which by that time was serving LUNCH. LOL.

All cultures have an "In Group" and an "Out Group". It is unfortunate, but, Human Nature and the tide of History being what they are, prejudice exists in every community. Rich and Poor, Black and White, Brahman and Untouchable, Homeowners and renters, Religious and non-religious, it is everywhere. Even a three-digit credit score can deny one housing, job, or a loan.

In Jesus' Day, it was Jewish People versus Samaritans. Now, historic events and religious beliefs had indeed separated these two groups from one another. When the Assyrians attempted to replace the Jewish People in Samaria with their own colonists, and subsequently when Nehemiah attempted to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, the Samaritans were rejected as a group and considered enemies of the Jews. (Naturally, at that point, the Samaritans felt the same way in return.) This is in spite of the fact that there were no pagan beliefs in the religion of the Samaritans, so the animosity is a little hard to understand. Today, we would look back, scratch our heads, and say, "So WHAT is your problem with the Samaritans?"

Jesus and his Disciples were coming through "Samaritan Territory" on their way home from Preaching and Teaching. Hungry and thirsty...it was time to eat, but they were in a "bad section of town". The disciples had to "go shopping" and Jesus stayed at the well where He had a wonderful conversation with the Woman who went there at High Noon, thinking she would be alone.

When the disciples got back, there Jesus was talking to this Samaritan Woman. It was the first of many surprises they would encounter with their Lord not acting like a "normal" Rabbi.

After reading the brief hx, I understand why the Samaritans were offended after offering help. It could have ended up like the Hatfields and the McCoys. Tangentially, it looked like the government was using an “open borders” policy to manipulate the populace. What I don’t get is why some people have the need to control so much.
Oh, and when the border of the artwork showed up on the bottom of the screen, I thought, “Wow, El Kabong is channelling Connor MacNessa!”
