There is a line in the Acts of the Apostles that I once found humorous: So the word of God continued to spread, and the number of disciples in Jerusalem continued to grow rapidly. Even a large number of priests became obedient to the faith. (Acts 6:7) Of course the priests referred to here are the priests of the ancient Temple, the Levitical priests. In the past, such a line seemed ironically funny to the average Catholic who heard it.
But that humor, in recent days, seems more darkly true and less ironic. Indeed, in the past two decades and now, once again the reputation of the priesthood and episcopacy has been sullied by the deeply sinful, unchaste, unnatural and unconscionable acts of some priests and bishops. They have harmed many victims and disgraced the priesthood. They have engaged in great evils, often repeatedly and with no accountability. But they will answer to God for what they have done.

The Church should be self-correcting, but we have not been so. ..it has taken a secular state and threats of severe legal action to compel us to be more inwardly accountable. It is reminiscent of Pharaoh having to rebuke Abram for his crime of putting his own wife Sarai in the harem to protect himself (see Genesis 12:10-20). It is like the pagan sailors who had to tell Jonah the prophet to pray to God (Jonah 1:6). It is like Jesus finding more faith among the Gentiles than his own people. And now, too often, it takes grand juries, judges, financial and legal threats to get us to do what we should have done all along.

My esteem for Charles Pope started high and just keeps going higher and higher.
He’s a mensch.
The WINNING posting!
He writes with courage and conviction.
“Houston, we have a problem”.
1 Peter 4:17.
Praying the Church can get it right...sheer inertia is an impediment. God Bless
Pretty sure that's _not_ true. I can look up his statements if you want me to.
He is obviously not the problem, that is, the only problem, if the issue long pre-dated him.
Why did Benedict XVI have to deal with sexual abuse cases outside of Buenos Aires by the hundreds, if Bergoglio were the only problem? Obviously, he wasn't the only problem.
(Please note, I'm not saying he said or did the right thing, nor that I approve of what he's done, or of what he does most of the time, or anything like that. I'm just pointing out that your statement that he's "never uttered a single word of condemnation" is untrue.)
Thank you for the correction.
Enjoy your day.

I will say this. Roman Catholics who use the caucus thread protection need to monitor their thread for violations from their own members. Plus, they need to be sure theyve reviewed the article their posting to be sure it qualifies for a caucus label.
I understand and get it.
Right now what we are seeing is nothing short of a hot mess.
These Catholic parishes openly celebrate LGBT. Why arent bishops stopping it?
New Ways Ministry:LGBT-Friendly Parishes
New Ways Ministry: Building bridges between the LGBT community and the Catholic Church since 1977
Is this a Catholic Caucus? Or was it removed. Confused.
One parish in my diocese was listed there too -— OL Fatima in Alcoa, TN. I and several others alerted my bishop via Twitter -— he’s an honest man -— and he Tweeted back that he was going to do what needs done. I think he will.
It’s a shame when the best our SSA-afflictred brothers and sisters can get, is a morally—compromised, gay-afflicted parish. This diocese needs Courage: the organization, and the virtue.
I’m wondering if you might mean Donatello’s (with hat!). Caravaggio’s painting ‘Bacchus’ also gets the point across. Or maybe you mean the famous David of Michelangelo. Contrary to modern scholarship, he was a chaste and religious man.
Did I say Caravaggio? I mean Donatello’s, of course.
Homos were rampant in the priesthood when I was an altar boy 50 years ago.
Fifty years ago was 1968, and the homosexual trouble peaked in the decades following the close of VatII, roughly '65 to '85.
That's what the John Jay report and other studies indicate.
In that same time period, I had a boyfriend who had been a Franciscan seminarian. Their seminary (Duns Scotus, Southfield MI) was decimated in the aftermath of the Humanae Vitae dissent and the hurricane impact of the Sexual Revolution.Throngs of priests-professors decamped. Then the seminarians cleared out as well.
I don't have a detailed knowledge of their history, but my impression was that the heteros swarmed OUT, which left the homosexuals IN with a decisive majority.
What's going on now is a flare-up of that same process. It's spooky how much it feels like the '70's all over again.
