The Problem of Profanity
Fr. Ted's Blog ^ | 06-19-2018 | Fr. Ted Bobosh

And the tongue is a fire. The tongue is an unrighteous world among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the cycle of nature, and set on fire by hell.

For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by humankind, but no human being can tame the tongue—a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless the Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brethren, this ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening fresh water and brackish? Can a fig tree, my brethren, yield olives, or a grapevine figs? No more can salt water yield fresh.  (James 3:5-12)

In just about every generation, writers comment on how bad things have become – as if there were a previous age in which things were better.  That probably is a human thing, as far back as Seth who really could think things were better in his parent’s day, but even in Paradise there was a serpent and sin.  St. Tikhon of Zadonsk, who died in 1783AD,  laments the disrespectful language he was hearing in Holy Russia which he claimed had become commonplace.  He would not believe how tame the profanity he laments sounds today and in fact for many would not even count as profanity.  His words remind us we should be mindful of what we say.

Profanity has become commonplace – a thing that is extremely unbefitting Christians – as to say “By God!,” “God be upon it!,” “As God is my witness!,” “God look after it!,” “For Christ’s sake!,” and many others. And these are said by some people quite often, even in every utterance. Such profanity is nothing but a satanic plot devised to dishonor the name of God and for the destruction of man. You should guard yourself from swearing in these and other ways.

When there should be need for you to affirm the truth, let Christ’s words be for you, Yea, yea; nay, nay; for whatsoever is more than these cometh from the evil one (Mt. 5:37). (Journey to Heaven, p. 15)

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good man out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil man out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. I tell you, on the day of judgment men will render account for every careless word they utter; for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”  (Matthew 12:34-37)

Hey, trying going into “gift shops” in “upscale” neighborhoods. The merch, like tee shirts, stationery, coffee cups, etc, has got four letter Anglo Saxon all over.

And most of the customers in these stores are women and their daughters.

Have you seen the Goliath series? In some scenes the F-Bomb in various forms constitutes 20% of the dialogue.

Too much for me. I turned it off. Too much Hollywood attempting and probably succeeding at corrupting our language.

Not for me. It adds nothing to the story. Just dumbing us down bit by bit.

Americans, especially women, are the foulest mouth people I have ever met. People in other countries don’t talk like that. One reason among several (including dress, behavior and attitude) that I find American women unbelievably unattractive. Thinking of having to live with one of them 24 hours a day gives me the chills.

oh thats too bad. I don’t know where you are from, but I’d bet no American woman cares about your superior attitude.

Check out “8 Million Ways to Die” sometime (or don’t, if you’re smart). Incredibly profane, with one line of dialog essentially consisting of two characters yelling “F,,k You”, “No, F,,k YOU!” back and forth at each other. Simply brilliant writing, I tell you. / sarc

I used to visit some family members in Manhattan every year. Wanted to feel like a NYer, downstate city type. So I bought a black $30 shirt that had print on it:

F OFF YOU F’ING F!

With the full 4 letters in place.

Wearing that and keeping my eyes mostly on the ground when walking, I could have passed for a native.

Profanity has always been around. The question is how much has society tolerated.

In American media there used to be the Motion Picture Production Code [Hays Code] that lasted until 1968. This regulated a great deal of content in the movies.

Television also was under a strict set of standards.

By the 1960s the Hays Code was being abandoned.

Profanity, more violence, nudity began to make their way into more and more films. It's hard to see a movie today without some level of profanity.

And TV has now become a cesspool as well. Profanity in movies is no longer being edited/bleeped over. There are very few "safe" shows for kids to watch today.

All of this has mainstreamed profanity and nudity where it's almost a surprise when a movie doesn't have one or both.

Sit nomen Domine benedictum! Every> day I hear people use the Lord's name in vain. JC! Even 'J 'effin C' are so common nowadays as to generally be accepted as a way of expressing one's disbelief/disapproval. Shameful, sinful, inexcusable!

In this regard, even FR isn’t as it once was. Recently there’s been a lot more of the S-word around.

Profanity - what a weak mind resorts to when it finds itself unable to express itself with rational arguments....some fine examples would include mega-minds like Sean Penn and Robert De Niro...
