Good observation of the roles...as far as I know it's still true; but things tend to change even in time tested older cultures like Hungary.

Especially in the high tech oriented youth of Budapest.

The men are "peacocks" indeed...but the women are revered for their role in keeping the household and family intact.

Older Italian culture was very similar.

Thanks! :-)

I'm actually only going my "family stories"/"family lore" and my own observations of Hungarians ( those born and raised there ), whom I have met.

My family has been here since shortly after the American Civil War, so while they assimilated long ago, some things ( like the oldest female being a true "matriarch", not to mention running her and everyone else's kitchen, when she is at someone else's home and tracing the family through the female line ) just don't seem to die out; or haven't done so in my and other's families.

Yes, in way, this is similar to older Italian culture, with 2 exceptions : 1) women were/are treated as "equals" and not seen as "lesser lights" when it comes to opinions about politics or anything else 2) mothers don't hold onto their sons way into adulthood, as though they were still children and keep the tied to their apron strings.

What hasn't changed, EVER, in Hungary, is their desire for FREEDOM from outsiders and/or an oppressive government.

OTOH...Hungarian immigrants ( excluding that damned ex-Nazi, Soros ) have added much to American culture and Science, not to mention their contribution ( re the A Bomb ) to our success in winning WW II.
