Bishop Curry’s royal wedding sermon was admirable – but he left something out
Catholic Herald ^ | 05/22/2018 | by Fr Alexander Lucie-Smith

As I thought it might be, Bishop Michael Curry’s sermon at Saturday’s Royal Wedding was a cracker. It divided opinions, sure, but that is a better fate than being ignored or swiftly forgotten, as normally happens. Funnily enough, the sermon got the thumbs-up from the Guardian. But then as Brendan O’Neill observed, the sermon was, like the new Duchess, very political.

Curry is “woke” when it comes to matters like gay marriage. I have not researched the matter, but I doubt there is a single issue on which he is not “progressive”; and though we do not know that much (yet) about the Duchess of Sussex’s views, we can surely hazard a guess that she is absolutely “woke” as well.

While I appreciated the sermon – especially the way Curry made the wedding into an explicitly religious occasion, as opposed to a secular ceremony with religious ornaments – the political overtones of his sermon leave me scratching my head. For the truth is that love on its own is not enough. Listeners might have come away with the impression that human goodwill can save the world, by making poverty history and so on. That wasn’t actually his message, but listeners could have been forgive for thinking otherwise.

The world needs human goodwill, but – and this is the key point that the Church needs to keep on proclaiming – human goodwill will seriously go astray unless it has a profound understanding of God’s law. For instance, marriage is a good thing because it conforms to God’s law for the human race; and God’s law for the human race with regard to marriage is made clear to us through revealed law (the Ten Commandments), through tradition, and through natural law as well. Marriage provides us with a structure that gives form and shape to our good will; once that structure is removed, once we think goodwill alone can redeem any structure, particularly those of our own devising, then disaster usually follows.

The other thing that has to be said is the Law, natural and revealed, is part of God’s goodwill towards us, and not to be rejected as standing in the way of love. It cannot do so, for love and law have the same source, God Himself.

I imagine that Curry and myself would be poles apart on matters such as Natural Law, and God’s law in general. But there is no progress without reference to tradition and reference to law. God is love, and we find that love in tradition and law.

But let me end on a more positive note by saying that, as one born in Sussex, I am happy to have a new Duchess, however “woke” she may be.

I commonly associate “woke” with having Cultural Marxists attitudes.

It’s a form of intellectual and ideological coma, not awareness.

Woe to the churches that are guided by politics. And most denominations in this country are waaaaay too political. The church I attended versed hard core left after 9/11. And it lost half it’s congregation. Sadly, they had just built a new sanctuary and the other half had to finish paying off the bill. Boo Hoo. I thought this guy was way over the top. And I think it’s is purely obnoxious to go into someone else’s house and start chastising them for things that YOU think are wrong with their behavior. But then, Leftists are Ike that. And I thought that Meghan enjoyed the sermon far more than Harry did. And I can guarantee you that the Royal Family paid for everything, including the airfare and accommodation for this Bishop. (And just an historical note, Britain abolished slavery over 30 years before the USA did)

I didn’t think it was admirable. That’s when I turned the wedding “off” .. after about 30 minutes of this drivel.

He is from the Chicago liberation theology movement. Too many not-so-subtle references to social justice issues. Whether this was appropriate for a wedding sermon is in the eye of the beholder.

The problem is that scripture says “God is love”. Bishop Curry has it “Love is God”. Huge difference.

I stopped reading at the word “woke”—— I detest it and so-called journalists shouldn’t use it-——dreadful English grammar.

"liberation theology"

Senator Tim Kaine used to follow liberation theology and supported the Sandinista in Nicaragua teachings. Thanks to Trump this chump is not our VP.

So I got up early last Saturday and went ot flip on the news and the wedding was on instead. As soon as I saw this guy the first thing that popped into my mind was the Preacher played by Arsenio Hall in the movie "Coming to America"

The Most Rev. Michael Bruce Curry, presiding bishop and primate of the The Episcopal Church and former leader of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, will undergo surgery for prostate cancer next week, he said in a statement released Wednesday through the Episcopal News Service.

“I am happy to say that the prognosis looks very good and quite positive,” he said in the release. “I have spoken with several others who have gone through this, and who have offered both encouragement and helpful advice. I will be in the hospital for at least a day, then at home to recuperate.

“I’ve been told that four to six weeks is a reasonable time to anticipate. I plan to resume my duties in early September and I do not anticipate any significant changes in my commitments.”

Curry, 65, said the cancer was found during an annual physical, and that after tests and conversations with doctors, his wife and his daughters, he decided to have surgery to remove the prostate gland next Tuesday.
