In past centuries, the. Christian Lenten fasting were very strict indeed, on the level of the Muslim Ramadan fast.
Today, not so much.
We have two mosques in town. They had a church split. They complain that young Muslims won’t attend Mosque when they come to America. They are envious of the local Christian churches who have lots of college students.
We will see on Saturday of the wedding of the year.
Our problem is that some Muslims observe and some don’t. So Mohammed is fasting while Achmed is chowing down on a bacon cheeseburger. It creates a tiny amount of friction because observant Muslims are supposed to be fasting from passing judgment on other Muslims.
The Yom Kippur fast is 24 hrs. However, children, pregnant and nursing mothers, the sick and infirm, and the elderly are not obligated, and in some cases, prohibited from fasting.
I wonder if Ramadan has similar exceptions.
I usually fast during the day just because I dont like to stop working and eat.
I avail myself of coffee about every two hours.
So far its working for me.
I won’t be watching even though I have Britbox. I have no interest in it. I haven’t watched a royal wedding since Diana when I was very young.
And many others
Mohammadens in Great Britain area assimilting when they don't live in the ghettos like in parts of Birmingham or in Tooting. If you head to Brighton you will find a few blokes at the pub with Irani or Syrian surnames (they change their names to something more like Jazz or Fred or whatever)
Granted, that means that they are MINO - Muslim in name only.
It has exceptions for pregnant and nursing mothers and the sick and infirm but not for kids or the elderly
You’re citing educated people like VS Naipaul, for God’s sake! A man who came from highly educated parents and was educated at British schools in the Caribbean! (Great writer, btw.) I’m talking about the thousands of third-world migrants in Britain who are holed up in gigantic no go areas, particularly in the north of England. Come on, get real. It’s like comparing Salmon Rushdie to the average muslim in Minnesota.
I know some who I suspect are fasting pretty rigorously. It’s voluntary of course and they keep it to themselves.
Indeed. You have hit the nail on its head.
I just object to your putting a blanket statement of "all third world" etc. - the problem is pure and simple - Izlam. Toss it out and make it clear that there is zero possibility for repercussion and then they assimilate. I've known Iranians in the south of England who assimilated very well, but then they tossed out Izlam the moment they stepped foot in England.
I don’t really have a problem with you having a problem with me having a problem with third worlders, ok? I have my opinion and I stand by it. VS Naipaul is a ridiculous example of “the third world” - a man educated in British public schools, for God’s sake!
Since I live in NYC and NJ, I think I should know something about assimilation of the third world into a first world society. Where I live in NJ, we have the largest population of Indians in the United States. Some are well integrated but many are not. That is a consequence of chain migration which Trump is attempting to stop. The endless family members, Hindu and Muslim, who are poor and backward and near-illiterate is a sight to see. This is a county that was once home to at least a thousand Jewish survivors of the Holocaust!
Since you do not choose to live in the US, maybe you should drop back for a visit to see how the country has changed.
