I have a friend who lives in London who told me that it is a well-known fact that you never go to hospital without someone who can speak for you when you can't. The hospital arbitrarily decides that you must be aloud to die "with dignity" in a back room, with no food or drink or anyone to clean you up in the process. The loud person who is with you prevents any move to a back room.

But what Alfie and the other little boy signals is that the insurance of people who can speak for you no longer holds. The medical and legal establishments have clasped hands together in a pact that says no one will escape their finishing touches.

Unless, of course, you are a 96 year-old monarch or a famous scientist.
