I think the most important book is The Dictator Pope followed by The Political Pope.

There's also The Lost Shepherd by Philip Lawler. It's particularly devastating because Lawler was a Francis loyalist for a long, long time. But it all finally became too bizarre to normalize. Lawler is also an excellent writer.
