Top Southern Baptist Leader Resigns Over ‘Morally Inappropriate Relationship’

The president and CEO of the Southern Baptist Convention’s executive committee announced Tuesday that he was resigning because he engaged in an immoral relationship.

Frank Page did not go into detail about the relationship except to say that it was “morally inappropriate” and characterized it as a “personal failing,” according to The Associated Press. Page initially announced that he was retiring, but chose later in the day to acknowledge the true reason for his resignation “in a more forthright manner.”

“It is with deep regret that I tender my resignation from the SBC Executive Committee and announce my retirement from active ministry, effective immediately. As a result of a personal failing, I have embarrassed my family, my Lord, myself, and the Kingdom. Out of a desire to protect my family and those I have hurt, I initially announced my retirement earlier today without a complete explanation. However, after further wrestling with my personal indiscretion, it became apparent to me that this situation must be acknowledged in a more forthright manner. It is my most earnest desire in the days to come to rebuild the fabric of trust with my wife and daughters, those who know me best and love me most,” Page’s statement read.

Stephen Rummage, a Florida pastor and chairman of the SBC’s executive committee, said in a statement on behalf of the committee’s officers that he urged members of the SBC to pray for Page and his wife, and that the members of the executive committee were committed to providing spiritual and emotional support to Page’s family.

I am a Southern Baptist but am not familiar with the details.

It does sound like he committed either adultry or bad judgement with a female.

King David did even worse, having Bathsheba’s virtuous husband murdered to hide his sin. King David paid a terrible price for his sins but was still a good man and prayed for forgiveness.

The man will have to pay for his sins too. He still might be a good man if he truly repents but his usefulness to God has declined greatly.

Some are concerned this change in leadership will create a liberal bent within SBC policy, theology, outlook.

Not saying Page shouldn’t have been removed, just that it might portend a more leftist SBC.

I doubt that we (SBC) will be going more left wing. We tend to be more on the right side of the spectrum.

I want to believe that but Russel Moore concerns me greatly. He is the reason I voted against my church affiliating with the SBC and encouraged others to do the same. The congregation voted Not to affiliate.

Isn’t this Moore a long time admirer of Bill and Hillary Clinton?

I do notice a lot of “SBC” Churches are dropping the “B.”

I suppose they recognize it has a stigma, not all undeserved.

Russell Moore has an unbelievable unending budget, it’s buried deep, but can be found in the SBC website.

Russell Moore’s statement had no effect whatsoever on SBC votes.

Nada, zilch.

"Russell Moore’s statement had no effect whatsoever on SBC votes. Nada, zilch."

That may or may not be true but in the end it's irrelevant. Moore holds high office in the SBC, in very influential and it the most prominent voice the SBC puts out to the public. He is president of their ethics commission. When my church raised the possibility of affiliating with the SBC I did my due diligence and research the organization. Mostly I liked what I saw - good history and very solid orthodox statement of faith. But Russel Moore turned me off - big time. It was a deal breaker. I voted no and the resolution for affiliation failed to pass by a significant margin.

Keep an eye on Roy Moore and the ERLC. I’m not saying, I’m just saying.

I’m not SBC, but know about Page and thought well of him for a long time. This stuff happens. Satan doesn’t bother bringing down already fallen people. Christians are dangerous to Satan so they’re the prime targets. We pray for our pastor and his family every day to escape attacks.
