RE: What I recently read is that those exiting mainline Protestant churches and the Catholic Church have moved on to independent/non-denominational churches.
That’s what this articles says as well ( see charts above ).

Yup. I should have mentioned my observation was more in the way of a confirmation of it.
Ah, here’s the article (from 2015) that I mentioned reading recently:
“FactChecker: Are All Christian Denominations in Decline?”
https://www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/factchecker-are-all-christian-denominations-in-decline
I’m in a non-denominational church and it’s been growing steadily for years. I believe it’s the most conservative church in our area as far as following the Bible without caving into cultural pressure. Most of the newbies I’ve had conversations with have either been unchurched or are coming from more liberal denominations.
We have some Catholics coming to participate in our Bible Studies, as the whole community is invited and the local Parish Priests actually encourage it. Some have joined our church, but most stay Catholic and just avail themselves of some of our programs. We’re happy to have them.
I’m in Ohio. I’ve had several friends move to the south last year. Every single one of them has joined a Baptist church because that’s all they could find that was somewhat similar.
