BEIJING A group of influential Catholics published an open letter Monday to express their shock and disappointment about a report that the Vatican could soon reach a deal with the Chinese government, warning that it could create a schism in the church in China.
The Holy See has been in negotiations for several years with the Chinese Communist Party and is now believed to be close to an agreement over the appointment of bishops in China.
That agreement, under which responsibility for the appointment of bishops would probably be shared between the Vatican and the government, could pave the way for the eventual reestablishment of diplomatic relations between China and the Vatican, cut in 1951. The deal is also expected to confer Vatican recognition on seven state-appointed bishops, who had been excommunicated by previous popes.
But 15 leading Catholics, many of them from Hong Kong, have written to bishops all over the world arguing that the Chinese government should play no role in the selection of bishops. The group argued that the moral integrity of the seven illicit bishops was questionable.

Why shouldn’t the Red Chinese appoint bishops in China?
Communists already got their Pope.
You seem to be obsessed with this bizarre hostility to the apostolic churches and you keep inventing these myths and posting them on unrelated threads. Seriously dude your posts smack of trolling. And maybe you should check out the history of anti-Catholic bigotry which is long and ugly among these people you seem to think are being slighted by Rome.
And for the record I am not Roman Catholic.
They are not myths. Do you believe the things written in the Bible must have happened? Of course not. You have to defend evolution and historical criticism (both invented by Protestants) in order to prove you're not Protestant!

Playing the "urban ethnic immigrant minority" card is liturgical chrstianity's version of the race card. Apparently just as Blacks can't be racists, Catholics/Orthodox/etc. can't be bigoted against Protestants or mistreat them in any way--despite the use of ethnic slurs by liturgicals on this very forum.
And for the record I am not Roman Catholic.
I know what you are. I know about the "dark enlightenment," too.
But never mind. Keep blaming a literal interpretation of Genesis or Esther for anti-Catholicism so you can continue to justify your own evolutionism/historical criticism.
Judging by your remarks on the historical bigotry of Protestants for Catholics, I assume you think that contemporary Fundamentalist Protestants deserve all the bigotry being aimed at them by contemporary liberals. That takes brass considering that those hated Fundamentalist Protestants are the only chrstians standing up in the culture wars while Catholicism has sold out and Orthodoxy never wanted to get involved.
"Inbred trailer trash"--doing the jobs that proud, puffed up, hyper-intellectual apostolic chrstianity is too yellow or too sophisticated to do.
No, no, Catholics lead the way, still, in the culture wars, in every respect, including money, in areas of pro-life, medical ethics, euthanasia, gene ethics, etc.
You cannot possibly be serious. Oh wait . . . you are.
What can one say to such hallucinations? (BTW, thanks to the Catholic Church for running off the battlefield and leaving "inbred trailer trash" standing alone against the entire world.)
I vividly recall Hartford, Connecticut Archbishop Whelan's role in the culture wars when he was part of a lawsuit against teaching creationism in Arkansas schools.
I wonder what your atheist scientist heroes think of the "virgin birth?" Why don't you ask one?
But at any rate, we're on the wrong thread for this. And I fully admit starting the whole thing. I apologize to the OP and the moderators for this and suggest any further "dialogue" on these subjects be conducted elsewhere.
Maybe the Catholic Church can have a counter-coup to depose Francis and get Benedict back?
