Tsar Nicholas and Family Canonized Because put Moral Ideals Above the Crown—Pat. Kirill

In addition to their holy deaths, the Russian Orthodox Church canonized Tsar Nicholas II and his family as saints because they placed moral ideals above the royal crown, His Holiness Pat. Kirill stated at the opening of the 26th annual Nativity Readings yesterday, reports RIA-Novosti.

The theme of this year’s Readings, held inside the Moscow Kremlin, is “Moral Values and the Future of Mankind.” The Nativity Readings are a Church-public forum held annually in the sphere of education, culture, social service, and spiritual-moral enlightenment.

“As if a reward for the love that reigned in this family, they remained inseparable in death. Christian moral ideals were for them higher than the royal crown. They did not consider belonging to a royal or boyar family as a sign of nobility, but purity of thought and purity of soul,” the patriarch told packed crowd of more than 6,000.

I understand the sentiment, but find it historically misplaced.

Nicholas was perhaps the WORST ruler Russia ever had, and his complete incompetence and lack of vision was largely responsible for creating the conditions “on the ground” that gave rise to the Bolsheviki.

England was afraid to accept the Tsarist family as refugees because the British population was very much against it. Itmight inflame the British public against the British crown itself.

Interesting point Ciexyz.

Worthy to consider how and why the British monarchy endured while the Russian one met such a brutal, gory end. The ROC and Russia still not at peace about it.

As for the UK, Royal baby on the way and a Wedding in May to be viewed by the entire world.

I’m not thrilled about the Royal Wedding in May. I wish Harry had married a nice English woman who was perhaps the widow of one of his Army buddies, or a nature specialist who runs a Scots nature preserve, or a Welsh woman with three degrees who rose high in the British civil service or is a respectable ambassador somewhere for the Crown’s interests. You get the idea. For the future good of the monarchy.

England wasn’t asked. The monarchy made the decision that was best for the monarchy.

Our own President gave his version last of a “king’s speech” called the SOTU.

Exactly! And Queen Mary took (stole) the Romanov jewels for herself. Czar Nicholas and King George were cousins and looked like twins. So much for family loyalty!

“WORST ruler Russia ever had”

reminds me of Moctezuma, who was very devout, and also a lousy ruler completely ill-suited to lead the Aztecs meeting Cortez.

Splendid detail and colors on that icon. A majestic but still sobering depiction of the Tsar and his family.

Incompetence and holiness, particularly of the martyrdom sort, are not at all incompatible.
