I’m Protestant and still wish something could be worked out to let the officer celebrate a mass when his religion calls for it.

I’d have a problem calling it duty time unless he can walk away at a moment’s notice. And I am not sure common Catholic views of due reverence allow that.

I'm a RCIA teacher (if that counts for expertise, big grin) and anyone can walk out of a Mass of Obligation, even if it's Christmas Day, if they are emergency personnel: cop, armed forces, doctor, nurse, EMP, security guard. Moms even walk out with screaming babies.

If this Mass did not compromise his readiness and he never missed a call, I'm calling this cop OK.
