CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The bishop of West Virginia's Episcopal Church is encouraging congregations to carry the opioid overdose-reversing drug naloxone.
The Charleston Gazette-Mail reports the Rev. W. Michie Klusmeyer made the request at the West Virginia Episcopal diocese's annual convention in Charleston last weekend.
Klusmeyer says naloxone should be available not only to members of the surrounding neighborhood who might overdose, but to church members who might have substance abuse problems.

Churches should have more community outreach programs but they need to stick with the charitable feeding/clothing of those truly in need - and, oh yeah, talking about Jesus....
This do good Bishop could end up killing a lot of druggies.
The half life of Naloxone is very short time wise. Druggies with a heavy over dose could respond positively and seem okay. Then a couple of hours later the Naloxone blood levels could be below therapeutic levels. Then, the patient could fall back into a serious OD problem, renarcotisation, again.
“the pharmacodynamic actions of naloxone last for a briefer period than all but the most short acting opioids;8,24,29,31 although the elimination half life of naloxone is similar to that of morphine (6090 minutes)9 it is redistributed away from the brain more rapidly.32 Consequently, the patients may become renarcotised and suffer harm if they self discharge from medical care early. Clinicians are clearly walking a tightrope between precipitating AWS and avoiding renarcotisation.”
Just a hunch, but I’m guessing there aren’t a lot of West Virginia episcopalians.
From my research that drug cant hurt you.
I thought the Bishop would want the congregation to carry it on their person in case a person in their orbit should need it. Until I read the article.
The article claims over 8k. Not a lot.
In principle and depending on what’s actually happening this could be PART of a good idea. It’s like have an IED on hand.
You need a protocol amd a team of parishioners trained to use the decide or the med and, above all, an agreement with area first responders.
Only if their congregations tend to shoot up smack during services and church social events.
AED right not IED?
But I get what you’re saying. Yeah from looking, it doesn’t seem to have side effects and prevents overdose which is a growing problem and a shocker if you have public bathrooms or operate public facilities that have “private spaces.”
Another spiritually empty trend for a spiritually empty trendy denomination...

They haven’t OD’ed. They just fell asleep during the sermon.
If there’s such a strong need, the preacher isn’t doing a very good job. Sounds like he’s spreading a bit more than the word of God.

Not only is there a church in every town, just about. At least the big towns.
This bunch in Charleston? When roe became legal they helped women fly out of Charleston to get abortions. Then they hooked up with two Roman Catholic nuns, Barbara Ferraro and Patricia Hussey to open Charleston’s first abortion clinic. These nuns were later excommunicated. You may or may not remember these two on the Phil Donahue show?

And episcopal membership attends only once a month or less. 2k. Barely a single large baptist church.
Back in the late 70’s early 80’s this would have been unheard of. What these women did was shocking.
Yes too a point.
This is part of the “opioid crisis” crap that is F¥!!ng People like Me.
