Faithful Catholics wouldn’t be indulging in their own judgement over the judgement of the church authorities, now would they?

Sure they would if those church authorities were heretics. That's why they they're "faithful Catholics".

Except “heretics” are whoever the church authorities declare to be heretics. Using your own individual judgement on such matters would itself be heresy.
