As Pope BXVI said before his forced retirement: the future Church will be smaller and more vibrant.

He was forced out because the majority of Cardinals rejected that. Like all organizations they wanted to grow...more influence, more money, etc. Smaller, poorer, holier did not fit that vision. The things they are doing in loosening doctrine are all about attracting marginal people back to the collection basket.
