Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Meditating Upon The Names and Attributes of God

(Old Testament)

Genesis 17

The Covenant of Circumcision

17 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the Lord appeared to him and said, “I am God Almighty[a]; walk before me faithfully and be blameless. 2 Then I will make my covenant between me and you and will greatly increase your numbers.” 3 Abram fell facedown, and God said to him, 4 “As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations. 5 No longer will you be called Abram[b]; your name will be Abraham,[c] for I have made you a father of many nations. 6 I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you. 7 I will establish my covenant as an everlasting covenant between me and you and your descendants after you for the generations to come, to be your God and the God of your descendants after you. 8 The whole land of Canaan, where you now reside as a foreigner, I will give as an everlasting possession to you and your descendants after you; and I will be their God.” (End of Scripture Passage)

THE NAME GOD HAS CHOSEN FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR STORY IS "EL Shaddai". It means The "All-Sufficient God". The Hebrew Word "Shad" which is the Root of this Wonderful Name, is The Word for The Human Breast, which Nourishes the Child. What an AWESOME Name that God Has Chosen, By His Holy Spirit, To Reveal to Moses in the Torah!

How Awesome That Our Heavenly Father uses Such A Brilliant Analogy of His Own Creation to Inspire This Name in The Torah. The Nourishment that a Mother provides a Newborn is ALL that Baby Needs to survive. Not only are all the necessary nutrients there, but the Mother's Antibodies and other ingredients are ALL that is needed by the infant. Not only that, the bonding and nurturing that takes place during this process can not be measured. And this process is repeated throughout the Animal Kingdom, from puppies to lambs, to mice, ferocious lions, and gentle deer. Just as there is no "conflict" between the plural Names with singular verbs and modifiers, there is no conflict between this feminine imagery ascribed to Father God. HE IS WHO HE IS, and Created ALL there IS, and Mothers were HIS IDEA in the First Place.

Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

We see this Wonderful Name of God for the first time in this Chapter. The first time I ever heard this Name was in a contemporary Gospel song by Amy Grant, when I was in my late twenties). It is usually translated as "Almighty", and interestingly enough, "The Almighty" has become a very common Name for The One True God. This very Ancient Name denotes All-Sufficiency. Unlike the gods and goddesses of the Ancient World, each with its own purvue, El Shaddai is All-Sufficient, for ALL our circumstances, ALL our needs, All of Nature, and ALL of our Existence. Not only is there no "other", there is NO NEED for ANY Other.

THE NAME GOD HAS CHOSEN FOR THIS MOMENT IN OUR STORY IS "EL Shaddai". It means The "All-Sufficient God".

There's a word play on "the name" here because the gematria of El Shaddai = 345 = HaShem ("The Name") = Moses

I find myself coming back to this article often because it just keeps making connections:

As we have already seen, early on Joseph is linked to the fulfillment of Jacob's legacy.

These are the generations of Jacob, Joseph was seventeen years old ...[Genesis 37:2]

At the outset, the Torah connects Jacob with Joseph. Of all his sons specifically Joseph holds the key to not only Jacob's but the family's mission.

When God first makes his covenant with Abraham, He commands the patriarch to circumcise himself and all his descendants. Here Abram becomes Abraham -- a new name signifying a new identity. As a result of the circumcision, Isaac will come into the world and the chain will continue. But there is another significant element in this section. God gives His name as El Shadai.

When the blessing of Abraham -- or nationhood -- is passed on, the name of God invoked is Shadai.

We see a pattern developing. When God blesses the patriarchs with many descendants, the name of God employed is Shadai.
