Wonderful to know that Christians won’t die in accidents or natural disasters. Especially if praying really hard.
Yes.
God told me not to make any comments, so I’ll just shut up.
A guy at a Christian college house said that he felt led to do the easiest household tasks, the performance of which got him out of the hardest household tasks, in an obvious effort to claim divine approval for his laziness.
There are a lot of people who believe that stuff.
Jesus taught us to pray "thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven".
Thy refers to God not man. Most Christians understand this. For those who are not Christians:
1 Corinthians 1:18
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God
Yes there is a tremendous amount of scripture that says God will continue to talk to us.just 2 that come to mind,,
joel 2.28 and john 14.26
It happened again recently. I was listening to a sermon online and the preacher said, God told me. Apparently everyone in the congregation enjoyed it from the response I heard, but I immediately turned it off.
In order to find his equal, an Irishman is forced to talk to God!
So you are trying to say that God never speaks to us except through His word? Is there scripture to show that God has stopped speaking to us?
If some one tells us God spoke to them, fine but if they try to influence us by that fact we should beware, its time to search the scriptures.
Had a friend tell a story about a man who came to his office. He said he could see the guy talking to his secretary. She came into his office and told him “This man says God told him to come see you.”
He said he thought “Wow! God knows I’m so spiritual He’s sending people to me for guidance.”. So he told his secretary to send the man in
The man walked into his office and immediately said “God told me you were going back give me $20.” (This was back in the 80’s and the dollar went a lot further.)
My friend said “I have no doubt that God told you I was going to give you $20. But He has not told me yet. However, He IS telling me to ask you to leave my office.”
joel 2.28 and john 14.26
1 Cor 13:8
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
His response, with the Pastor looking on, was then why did G_d have Jesus prepare for 30 years for a 3 year mission?
RE: Those who presume that God spoke to them (when He didnt) are in error.
So, how do we know that someone is speaking in error or not?
What guidelines do we have?
RE: If you say God told me but He didnt, then you have a problem.
Well, this brings up a question ... when someone says “God Told me’, how do we know that He did or did not?
On what basis do we determine the truth or falsity of it?
“Yep, it makes you think about the college dandies and why in the world people will take every thing they say as fact.”
Heh heh. When I used to work in industry I’d get young engineers right out of college who would complain about how this high-school educated assemblers (all women, some minorities) wouldn’t do things the way he wanted. My answer was usually “she’s been doing her job a long time and she is good at it. If you want to be good at what you do someday, you’ll listen to her more and complaint less”.
The sad thing is the kids graduating with Navel Gazing Studies degrees today are probably far worse.
>>> So, how do we know that someone is speaking in error or not? What guidelines do we have?
We have the Bible, and we have the Holy Spirit.
The closer you are in an intimate relationship with God, the more discerning you become.... because you hear His voice.
I would say consider the intended purpose of the message.
How does it line up with scripture?
What is the Holy Spirit telling you about it?
Is there confirmation from other witnesses?
With that said, my point was not how to tell if something is in error. My point was that we need to be careful with our accusations towards those who are simply using poor judgment in the choice of their words or acting with presumption. It is not the same thing as those who are getting rich off of God’s Name. Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit is a serious issue because it is unforgivable. If we succeed in convincing a presumptuous christian that he/she has committed it, it can do so much more damage than we can possibly imagine.
God will judge our every word, and such an accusation is nothing less than judgmental. It is for this reason that I avoid making that accusation towards anybody... even against those in my heart I suspect are guilty.
By the way... I totally agree with the title of this thread... It just crosses the line a bit on that particular sin.
I know a lot of people who use the *God told me* and use it in some pretty unGodly ways.
When I hear *God told me*, it also sets off alarm bells.
The Holy Spirit tells me stuff all the time. And the Holy Spirit is God. So no sale here.
RE: The Holy Spirit tells me stuff all the time
How do we know that it is the Holy Spirit telling someone and not their personal impressions?
