The Catholic church has regually suppressed Mary worship. It’s hard to stamp out because people like their goddess cults. And on the whole people getting a little too crazy about Mary seems a minor problem compared to protestant churches accepting divorced, homos, and anti-patriarchal people in their midst. Do a lot of older and ill-informed Catholics tend to do things that amount to worship as a practical matter? Yes.
