Polygamy, though far from ideal, is at least (absent other concerns) not a denial of the nature of marraige as between man and woman.

Maybe the norm for the culture at the time? Was there a shortage of men?
Monogamy did not seem common until the New Testament in spite of God’s laws.

Why were so many major characters in the Bible polygamists?
Because they were commanded by God. It was a blessing to increase their families sizes. And a blessing to the women as they were wed to a righteous man and blessed through their husbands. It is a true doctrine of God.
FYI, it was also part of the Mosaic law given to Moses directly from God. But only to be practiced when directed by God specifically.
