Yes, making a bow instead of genuflecting is an option for the elderly or disabled clergy. That is what Francis does. The idiots try to make it into a sign of disrespect.

Yes, making a bow instead of genuflecting is an option for the elderly or disabled clergy. That is what Francis does. The idiots try to make it into a sign of disrespect. I have no problem with him bowing instead of genuflecting (I'm in my 60s with bad knees and if I genuflected someone would have to help me get back up - I bow and make the sign of the cross). I do take issue with the Sacrament of the Altar being a "humble meal" though...
