Ah, you must be LDS. Martin left some of you very butt-hurt by holding LDS claims up for examination. Calling him a liar and a fraud may make you feel better but that claim is as ignorant as it is baseless.

Martin was irrelevant. He was typical of all the professional anti-Mormons; he relied on half-truths, strawman, and out right lies to sell his books.

He claimed to have a PhD in order to promote a persona of authority again in order to sell his material.

Martin lied about receiving a degree from “Biblical Seminary”, (now known as “New York Theological Seminary”), when in truth he bought a mail-order “Ph.D.” from an unaccredited mail-order diploma mill. Even though Martin claims not to have received this “Ph.D” until 1977, he repeatedly, fraudulently, referred to himself as “Dr.” Walter Martin on a number of documented occasions.

Martin lied under oath in a court deposition about doing a Master’s Thesis for his M.A. at NYU, claiming that it was completed in 1956. Martin later admitted on the BAM that he had not done a Master’s Thesis at all. NYU confirmed, in a letter dated Sept 22, 1982 that the course of study that Martin was involved in did not require a thesis.

Baseless? Really?

The entire anti-Mormon effort is irrelevant as it always has been. Joseph Smith Jr. will be remembered by tens of millions for the good he brought about. And hundreds of millions will have been blessed by the Church he restored. Martin is already all but forgotten.

"He claimed to have a PhD in order to promote a persona of authority again in order to sell his material."

Typical of your mendacity. Martin was already a very successful apologist for 16 years and didn't need a PhD to do so. In the mid 70s he was teaching at the Melodyland School of Theology and in the 80s at Simon Greenleaf School of Law and they needed their faculty to be credentialed.

Contrary to your dishonest charge his degree came from California Coast University, an accredited school still in operation:

CCU has been approved by the State of California since 1974. Such approval is currently granted by the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education a branch of the California Department of Consumer Affairs.

Before DEAC accreditation in 2005, among many other schools, CCU was investigated by the U.S. General Accounting Office (GAO) as part of a study of subsidies given to federal employees for coursework and degrees from possibly unaccredited schools and possible diploma mills. The GAO found no improprieties whatsoever by CCU, and CCU completed its accreditation soon thereafter.

Joseph Smith Jr. will be remembered by tens of millions for the good he brought about.

Those who actually read Joe Smith's own words will be remember him for condemning every Christian denomination as being "an abomination" in the sight of God. Which conveniently opened the door for him to declare himself a "prophet", and invent his own religion with its pseudo biblical veneer and its invented history. People unaware of Smith's writing might assume that LDS is just another Christian sect; but it's not, and Smith's own words make that plain

My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)—and which I should join.

I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: “they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.

He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home.

Joseph Smith: A Prophet of God

  1. Mohammed is remembered by his adherents for whatever good they perceive he did and he has more fanatics that Joseph.
  2. They both left written legacies their adherents consider holy.
  3. They both rejected the one holy catholic apostolic church.
  4. They both claimed to have been visited by an angel. Mohamed claimed Gabriel was the angel. Joseph claimed it was an angel of light named Moroni.

“when in truth he bought a mail-order “Ph.D.” from an unaccredited mail-order diploma mill.”

Joseph Smith had a degree, since being a con never requires a degree. Treasure hunters? Not required. Religious fraud? Nope. Horn dog? Never.

“Even though Martin claims not to have received this “Ph.D” until 1977, he repeatedly, fraudulently, referred to himself as “Dr.” Walter Martin on a number of documented occasions.

That’s nothing, people in the cult call Joseph Smith a prophet.

Don’t fall for StormPrepper’s self serving BS.

StormPrepper falsely says that Martin received his degree from an unaccredited diploma mill which he says is “now known as “New York Theological Seminary”.

In fact the degree is from California Coast University which passed a GAO audit and is accredited by the Distance Education Accreditation Commission. CCU was approved by the State of California in 1974 well before Martin received his degree.

The whole degree issue is fake news designed to avoid what really angers some LDS apologists. Martin effectively shined a light on Mormon theology using their own writings, illustrating where it greatly diverges from the historic Christian faith. You have to wonder why that upsets them considering that Joe Smith made that very point himself.

No worries there.

Mormons have an internet problems these days - too much documentation is available about Joe Smith, the con man and those who follow him.

The best they can do is call names, deny facts, and make assertions.
