The Russian Orthodox Church Wants the Total Abolition of Surrogacy

The Duma set to discuss a regulation on the matter. The Moscow Patriarchate says it "offends human dignity" and should be banned both on a commercial and voluntary basis. Children of "surrogates" will be baptized only after the period of parental penance. The proposed adoption by infertile couples. Russia passes from atheism to religion, while the West goes in the opposite direction.

Moscow (AsiaNews) - For the Church, headed by the Moscow Patriarchate surrogacy whether it is commercial or voluntary is unacceptable. This method of generating children "offends human dignity” according to Vakhtang Kipshidze, vice-chairman of the Synodal Department of the Patriarchate for relations between the Church, society and the media, in a statement released to the agency RIA-Novosti.

The draft law on banning surrogate motherhood in Russia is now being examined by the State Duma (Russian Parliament). In the presentation of the text on March 27, it is emphasized that the proposed ban would be temporary, in anticipation of a new overall draft regulation of surrogacy, which at the same time defend the rights and interests of newborn babies, surrogate mothers and prospective parents.

"The use of techniques surrogate motherhood is a choice of the child's parents. The Church cannot support this decision, as it considers that this constitutes an offense to human dignity and is in itself a reproductive technology of dubious morality" - said Kipshidze.

What’s the problem with surrogacy?

The world is upside down.

It may soon come to pass that the last refuge of people with traditional western values may end up being Russia and eastern Europe.

It treats children as a commodity, rather than a gift from God.

Surrogacy turns a child into a commodity for commercial exchange.

For starters.

Surrogacy also --- with true intentional aforethought --- brushes away a child's "natural" right for a "natural" mother-child relationship, and deliberately "vivisections" the unity of motherhood into separate zones for separate exploitation.

Natural motherhood is a unity, because it is seamlessly personal: the vocation of one integral person. The very same woman is your genetic mother, your gestational mother, your parturient mother, your nursing mother, your emotional/psychological mother, your kinship mother (living bridge to that half-galaxy which is your "mother's side of the family"), your teaching mother ("Mater et Magistra"), your social mother, your publicly recognized mother, your legal mother, etc. etc.

This provides an intricately-knit stability for normal childhood development and flourishing which is so valuable, it is literally priceless.

This unity is sometimes broken up by chance (death, divorce, severe illness, abandonment). It should never be broken up by choice.

It's even more. These are not just "traditional western values" which are being exterminated. These things --- sex and gender, marriage and family, motherhood, fatherhood, childhood---are natural realities of our being, per se. The assault is just as much "anti-Confucian" or "anti-Tao" as it is "anti-Judeo-Christian" or "anti-Western."

It's gone deeper than culture: they're uprooting our humanity. ALL human cultures are the target. The human being per se is the bulls-eye.

What is called “surrogacy” is an abomination. It violates human nature. No one should “carry” a baby for another woman. No one should get random sperm to make a baby for two lezzies. It’s contrary to nature and harmful to the kid.

How about women that want children, but are unable to carry them?

hmmm. Wasn’t the OT practice of a childless widow marrying her brother-in-law to continue his line in the family and protect the widow kind of like surrogacy?

No, it wasn’t. The practice of levirate marriage applied a legal fiction for inheritance purposes over a fully natural process of conception, gestation, birth, and child-rearing.

True. They’re uprooting reality.

That is what Postmodernism is all about. The deconstruction, or more exactly, the destruction of reality and rationality. It’s been the rage in the mental asylums known as university for several decades and now it’s spilling over to the general culture.

And right now we on the right have no answer for this onslaught, nor any effective leaders leading the counter charge.

There are certainly a significant number of women who want children but are unable to carry them. I was one such woman (two miscarriages.)

Surrogacy is no solution. It does not restore the woman's reproductive health, but it also intrinsically, intentionally disrupts normal procreative function (harvesting eggs, harvesting sperm, etc.) It deliberately and permanently trashes the primal mother-baby bond by walling the child away from the woman who gave him birth. It may e well-intended but it is always a planned, willed, aforethought, deliberate inflicting of a primal wound.

Murder. Several human lives must be created and destroyed to make the viable embryo(s).

It exploits the poor...

it makes babies a consumer product... imperfect babies are often abandoned.

and it separates love making from babies.

Adoption is the answer. Of course, you might not get a perfect white baby... or you might get an older child with emotional or physical problems.

been there, done that.

and how many infertile women used contraception until they were beyond the age of conceiving?

And sometimes God had other plans. I had a friend who could not get pregnant, and then had to put off adoption to nurse her dying parents...and then she took in her pregnant 15 year old niece to raise.
