Inuit. The proper name for them is Inuit.
"Eskimo" is considered an almost insulting term for them. Don't ask me how or why, but it is.
And thus endeth the lesson for the day.
I’m sure it’s a cultural thing.
It’s the same for the Deaf community.
*Hearing Impaired* is the hearing people’s term for them and they resent it. They do not consider themselves impaired and do not appreciate others labeling them for themselves.
They are Deaf (capital D) or hard of hearing and it is a point of cultural identification for them. That’s what they call themselves and that’s what they prefer.
“Eskimo” to you to....heh! Heh!
It’s kind of hard to see why Ess-kee-moe would be worse than In-you-it. Sounds like a sex toy.
That’s true, but I have seen documentaries which feature Alaskan natives, who DO use the word, Eskimo. When my husband, an Indian, saw that, he was surprised, but nonetheless, it is done. (And to forestall the next argument, I know a lot of genuine “Native Americans”, and unless they’re writing a book or making a political speech, they refer to themselves as Indians)
Are they going to rename the famous ice cream desert to “Inuit Pie”?
