What convention would you rather go to:
(A) Star Wars
(B) Star Trek
(C) Lord of the Rings
(D) A Renaissance Festival
(E) None of the above.
In college, my fraternity was nearly suspended after our Bilbo Baggins Birthday Bash party, on September 22nd oddly enough. I nearly cut off the dark lord’s thumb in a drunken sword fight with real swords. Good times.
I’d rather go to (E), if the rest of the (E) fans would too.
Back in the day, my first question would be — which convention has the cutest girls?
I am a nerd/Trekkie (versus geek/Trekker).
I have been to (F) A-D: A & B, more than once; C & D, once each.
I have never made or worn a costume, however.
I attended the last Star Trek convention hosted (as speakers) by both Shatner and Nimoy (according to my research).
But at Renaissance Festival, I get to dress in a green and yellow court jester's costume with pointy shoes and nobody laughs at me. I get one of those giant turkey legs to gnaw on and drink lots and lots of mead and cidre while I watch the knights in chain armor jostle each other on horses. All while harp and flute music is playing. It's a lot of fun.
Any type of “Con” attracts costume-bedecked obsessives who fully expect everyone surrounding them to dig their oddity just as much as they do. If you go as a fan, prepare to be a little embarrassed. If you go as a cultural anthropologist, prepare to be amused.
