Pope Francis will be 80 next month. Pope Benedict XVI retired at the age of 85. Cardinals cannot vote after they pass their 80th birthday, but there is nothing to prevent a pope who is over 80 from choosing new cardinals, and Pope Francis is not required to follow Pope Benedict’s example by retiring. By the time of the next papal election it’s possible that more than half of the voting cardinals will be men selected by Pope Francis.

It was the last barrier to runaway Marxism - who or what will replace it?
