After having sat out an Italian debate in May over the legalization of civil unions for same-sex couples, Pope Francis broke his silence on Sunday by coming out in support of Mexico's Catholic bishops in their efforts to derail a push for gay marriage. Which lends credence to the belief that Francis is okay with civil unions, but not gay marriage. A Catholic can not be okay with either.

I agree, this position lacks any logic. Traditional Catholicism teaches that sex outside of a sacramental marriage is always sinful regardless of the gender of the participants or the legality of marriage in their particular country. For the leader of the church to take such a relativistic view does nothing but further confuse the issue.
