The Catholic trust in "tradition" over the Word never ceases to amaze.
A clue no one seems to be noticing relates to the scene when Jesus’s mother and brothers came to the house where He was teaching and sent word that they wished to speak with Him outside. In His day, the eldest son was called upon if the father of the family was gravely ill or dead. The eldest of the family was the focal point of family council and decisions when an urgent issue arose. It was also the eldest, in the absence of the father, who was focused upon by the authorities if those authorities had issue with the family or a member of the family. Jesus would not be the eldest of Mary’s family if He had older brothers from a previous Joseph marriage.
