I choose to not be offended by this. Bottom line is the “Common” Era, meaning the chronology of time recognized by global human civilization, pivots on the birth of a Jewish baby in an obscure hill town in an even more obscure province of the Roman Empire. So call it BC, BCE, or whatever, the fulcrum upon which humankind’s time on this planet shifted remains the same.
BCE: Before Common Era
BC: Before Christ
For centuries, if not longer, BC was widely accepted. I find a big difference. One is an attack on Christianity and a sterile, ridiculous secular tag.
So is CE, common era, instead of AD, a stupid attempt to sanitize the Christian part of our culture.
Agreed. :)
And I’m tired of every single thread on this kind of topic devolving into this same BC/BCE argument, and completely eclipsing discussion of the topic, which is often something significant and cool like it is here.
Excellent point. Thank you.
Are you offended by Gay Marriage, or Suzie has two mommies?
I agree. We don't hear unbelieving people denying the very existence of Jesus anymore. Those who did have been shown to be the foolish ones. Archeology initially set out to disprove the Bible but as time goes by it continues to corroborate the biblical accounts of events, people and places. For those of us who don't doubt the truths Scripture teaches as well as the accuracy of its historical accounts, such finds further confirm the basis of our faith and confound the enemies of God who laughs in derision at their futile denials.
Agreed. Nobody needs to be offended when others use this BCE/CE instead of BC/AD. Offense is really a tool of Satan.
Look, we can still use BC/AD and I plan to do just that. If others want to use BCE/CE that’s up to them. It’s supposedly the same time-wise, just a difference in leaving out Christ which sooner or later the world does anyway. And if Christians and Christianity Today choose to use it, well I guess that’s up to them.
Let’s be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. As far as we know, at least so far, BCE/CE does not change the BC/AD time-frames, so at least for now, confusion is limited. Is Satan behind this? Most likely, but he is also behind believers being too easily offended because he wants to plant a root of bitterness in them. Don’t let Satan do that.
We can name the darkness, but let’s not curse the darkness. Let’s keep looking to Jesus and let our light shine.
