The Communist leaders were ruthless and evil, but at least they wanted to live, they were coldly pragmatic. This new wave of violence is led by men who want to ‘die for Allah’ and obtain their virgins.

I disagree. There are aged, wealthy elites in Islam who, like all elites, want others to do their bidding. They do not wish to die any more than the Soviet leadership did. Islam is harder to hit because it's not contained within one set of borders, and is, as he said, more like a swarm of bees. That's not to say we can't show 'em what for, though, and take out two of their five pillars.
