Justin Welby has opened up about how his own failings make him angry and said that he spends "a lot of time feeling a fraud" in a personal and at times emotional interview at the Greenbelt Christian festival in Northamptonshire.
Speaking to the 'vicar of Gogglebox', television star Kate Bottley in front of hundreds of festival-goers, the Archbishop of Canterbury said that wherever he went he found people who could do his job "infinitely better" than he could.
And in surprisingly frank comments about same-sex relationships, Welby said that he "can't see the road ahead" for the Church.
Before the banter-filled question and answer session, Welby was introduced by Christian Today's Andy Walton who said: "One of [our guests] is the most high profile Christian in the country... and the other is the Archbishop of Canterbury".
The Archbishop joked that "the fact that I'm Archbishop of Canterbury is one of the things that makes me seriously doubt the infallibility of God."
Welby said "there is only one way to overcome" the self-doubts, "and that's prayer and the Bible it's being part of the family of Christ... with all kinds of problems and issues and you've got a role in that family".
The Archbishop told of a visit last week to the Demelza hospice in Canterbury, of which he is patron and where he was showed around by an eight-year-old blind boy. An emotional Welby described sitting with with the parents of a young boy who had died, and told of how, having asked the parents if they wanted him to pray, he did not know what to say until words came to him. "Jesus, this is all wrong," he prayed. "We shouldn't be here."

Wait til God gets hold of him.
If threats are all he knows about God, then the buggery chains cannot be cut. Because they are idolatry of hostility.
Or can I put it differently? They’ve seen hell and they like it. If they were cast into flames with Satan at this point, it would be with a being viewed as a friend, not an enemy. “On some have mercy mixed with fear.”
who is he?..
You're missing the point. Disease is not the focus of the argument. The "equality" movement labels Christians as bigots who hate. Christ followers hate all LGBT - that is their message. Every day is OPPOSITE DAY with liberals. They always accuse the messenger of what they are guilty of. Sodomy produces disease - 100% accurate. The equality movement always gets to change the argument. The Christ message is life. The equality movement cloaks their message in "love" and peace when in fact they are promoting a culture of death and disease. Get them to defend that they are promoting a deathstyle not a lifestyle. When they change the subject get them back on point. They cannot defend male on male sex. They lose every time.
There is a pastor in CA who was raised by hetero professors. While growing up, both parents decided they were homosexual and divorced to fulfil their longings. They taught their son to hate Christians.
Eventually, he was introduced to Jesus and eventually became a pastor.
His parents were horrified.
But he was able to show the love of Christ to his parents, and both are now Christians, if I recall correctly, and they abstain from their homosexuality.
He wrote a book. Will post it in a later reply.
Well, it’s a sin, just like stealing. Not sure, why do Gays want the Church to change?
Gays are notorious drama queens.
Homos make up the only organized group of sinners that want to destroy the church.
Murderers? Stealers? Nope, they don’t do that.
There will be a lot of people who will be thrown into the fire if they don’t repent.
8 But cowards, unbelievers, the corrupt, murderers, the immoral, those who practice witchcraft, idol worshipers, and all liarstheir fate is in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.
But self righteous attitudes are never, ever conducive to people repenting. At the very LEAST they will lose reward; if not saved they too will undergo that same fire.
Are you so sure? Where did you obtain your data? A modern flare-up does not equate to historical integrity problems with the church.
Anyone who chooses not to believe will be lost for eternity.
And many will choose to be self righteous, not passing on a genuine word of saving faith. Some of those won’t believe at all and be damned as described; others will barely believe and have a scanty reward.
Only God knows a person’s heart and what he/she thinks. It’s best to work out our own salvation and pray for the others.
So flinging around generalities about damnation might not be such a peachy keen thing after all?
[So flinging around generalities about damnation might not be such a peachy keen thing after all?]
It’s in the BOOK. That’s the way it will be. Yes and no, never maybe.
And if you just “pray for the others” without a witness of SALVATIONAL LOVE, you may be sinning badly against God just the same.
Yes, it’s in the BOOK therefore I can use its threats against you too. As one gives out, one gets. That’s in the BOOK too.
I’m trying to figure out your beef. What is it?
