A huge argument for this having required supernatural help, is that whatever got a move on, somehow had to keep from getting digested, or decaying, itself while it did so.

I know of no scientist who credibly claims to have invested inanimate matter with life. Personally, I do not see any way that life can be created from non-life.
That is, however, a different subject than what the first cell ate... ;-P
