Tolkien was unclear about the afterlife.
Elves apparently lived forever, unless they were killed, which they could be.
Death was called “the gift of men,” which I can understand, but the sickly old age which precedes it is no gift!

My two "heroes" are two sisters in our parish. The younger one is heavy and uses a cane. She is almost 95.
The elder is thin as a reed, uses NO CANE and is almost 97. She is the Lector at the 11:30 A.M. Sunday Mass.
One sister drives TO Mass and the other sister drives HOME from Mass. Their home is about 6 minutes from the Church...as the crow flies.

I asked the older sister what her secret was to such health and vitality was and she said: staying active physically and mentally. She JUST stopped taking classes (only one a semester) at one of our local Catholic universities.

She will probably die on the Lector dais. :o)
No better was to go than at Mass reading an Epistle of St. Paul.
