Cardinal Sarah: "There is No Forgiveness if There is No Repentance"
Catholic World Report ^ | 6/5/16 | Catherine Harmon

"It is true that Jesus always goes before us and waits for us with open arms," Cardinal Robert Sarah said in an interview published today in Polish. "But it is up to us to also move towards Him!" Rorate Caeli has posted a translation of the interview, in which the prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments discusses mercy and forgiveness, the Church in Africa, and love for God as the starting point for holiness, among other subjects. A Polish edition of Cardinal Sarah's book God or Nothing: A Conversation on Faith was recently published.

In response to a question about "the heresy of good-man-ism"-according to which it doesn't matter much what someone does, as long as he is trying to "be a good person"-Cardinal Sarah says:

Unfortunately, what you say is part of a contemporary ideology that is among the most dangerous - that is, "just being good". This presupposes that any truthful content is trampled and refuted. This leads us to consider everything as "good", falsifying in this way even all that is truly part of the life of man. An important contemporary philosopher, Fabrice Hadjadj, has coined a brilliant formula, speaking on the "heresies of charity" of modern man, who confuses charity with the simple desire for good (at best) or almsgiving (in the worst case). But charity is the love of God: therefore, "we are" charity, and we give witness of charity towards others because God loved us first. In the same way, it is also with mercy, superficially understood by many as a clean slate over their sins. But, there is no forgiveness if there is no repentance. Jesus did not say to the adulteress, “Well, go and continue to do what you are doing since.......

Nope - doesn’t matter the reason - just call on Jesus’ name. It’s as easy (or hard (because of pride)) as that.

Again we are not saved by works but by grace through faith. God doesn’t require perfect people to be saved or you wouldn’t be saved. Neither would I. That should be obvious. God through Jesus justifies the UNGODLY (Rom 4:5).

You read it again “Repent AND believe in the Gospel.” Both are necessary, because both are two sides of the same coin.

not mutually exclusive. we are all sinners, repentance requires recognizing that we are and that Jesus is the answer.

Probably I guess but not the kind of repentance most talk about as a prerequisite for salvation. The kind of repentance they usually talk about is sin-conscious repentance. That is a dead work. There’s NOTHING we can do about sin which is why Jesus died for the sins of the whole world 2000 years ago.

We are saved by grace through faith. When I received Jesus, I wasn’t aware of “repentance” and thank God no one told me I had to “repent first”. I was only aware I needed Jesus. Jesus, not repentance, saves. Man, not God requires repentance before salvation turning repentance into a work and we are not saved by works.

So the difference between an eternity in paradise in the Divine presence and an eternity of sulphur enemas and unspeakable suffering in eternal fire is nothing more than a gut feeling that "Jesus picked up the tab"??

I like it.........LOL!! I always knew I was wasting my time trying to stay away from whore houses and booze!

There is No Forgiveness if There is No Repentance

I find no such condition when I read scripture but I am concerned to oppose that view when it comes from the Catholic World Report.

In a nutshell, it is my understanding that, forgiveness is mine and I didn’t have to earn or work for it. Forgiveness is for the entire world.

Repentance occurs when I receive the forgiveness on faith.

So you forgive yourself of your own sins?

How convenient in the Church of Me.

Nope. I never “recognized I was a sinner.” I only knew I needed Jesus. “Recognizing you are a sinner” is not a biblical requirement for being saved but ADDS a work. The gospel is the GRACE of our Lord Jesus Christ WITHOUT WORKS.

Sin consciousnesses never saved anyone. Jesus consciousness is what saves us.

All who call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Rom 10:13.

Your works good or bad do not determine your eternal destiny.

The eternal question is “What will you do with Jesus?”

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved and your house.” Acts 16:31.

"Call on Jesus' name" for what, exactly? If I have no consciousness of sin and therefore no fear of hell, Jesus has nothing that I need.

You needed Jesus for what?

We had a very risky pregnancy with our youngest. Many so called “good Christian” women told me to have my wife kill our youngest so it wouldn’t “traumatize” my wife.

Let’s just say if a man said that to me, I would have hit him.

Women are choosing to kill their own young, and then screaming it is not their fault and we need to support them. Sorry. Murder is murder.

So I'm good for a murder or two or a bit of nookie with the neighbor's wife?

That"s what Satan or Luther will tell you. It''s shame that some people, to this day, listen to those two evil souls.

“So I’m good for a murder or two or a bit of nookie with the neighbor’s wife?”

Hmm, a certain “man after God’s own heart” springs to mind, though I doubt he formulated his sin so flippantly.

Remember, the standard is absolute perfection. You may not even THINK about murder, adultery, etc. You may not stumble at even ONE point, else you’ve broken the WHOLE LAW.

So you forgive yourself of your own sins?

You don't read much about what you speak do you.

If you did, even if you didn't subscribe to it, you could discover that your forgiveness came over 2,000 years ago.

I would agree that Christianity is a great source of convenience and more importantly, a great source of contentment but it is not a church, it is a way of life.

Speak for yourself, cherry-picker. I quoted scripture in post #12.

It's a shame you reject the same.

Jesus died on the cross for your murder or two or a bit of nookie with the neighbor’s wife. His eternal and perfect sacrifice is greater than any sin. Otherwise, you do “count the blood of the covenant an unholy thing and do despite to the spirit of grace”.

God through Jesus is a justifier of the ungodly. Rom 3:26.
