There’s No Public-Health Case for Making Nuns Provide Free Birth Control

Today, the U.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in a group of cases challenging the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that non-profit employers offer health-care coverage that includes contraception, abortifacients, and sterilization. The challengers in the consolidated cases, captioned Zubik v. Burwell, include Little Sisters of the Poor, Priests for Life, and a variety of religious non-profits. Many of the arguments that have been put forth in support of the plaintiffs involve conscience rights. These are important arguments that certainly deserve attention. However, in the amicus brief I filed in on behalf of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, I emphasized public-health arguments which have received relatively little media attention. Among many journalists and commentators, there is a real misunderstanding about academic research that has been done on contraception. Many people intuitively think that greater access to contraception will automatically result in lower unintended pregnancy rates and abortions. The Guttmacher Institute, which up until recently was Planned Parenthood’s research arm, often publishes ideologically oriented research arguing for more spending on various contraceptive programs both in the United States and abroad. But a closer look at the research that has appeared in peer-reviewed economics and public-health journals tells a different story. There is a substantial body of peer-reviewed research that demonstrates that programs designed to improve access to contraceptives — through legalization, distribution, or subsidies — are either ineffective at best or counterproductive at worst.

No, it’s all about using our Constitution - which was written for the most part by devout Christians - to force Christians to act contrary to their most cherished beliefs.

If Leftists can’t jam their morality down other people’s throats, their whole sense of existence is threatened.

No, of course not. This is what it is about:
We must combat religion. That is the ABC of all materialism and consequently of Marxism. — Lenin
The issue is never the issue, as the SDS so blithely reminded us.

and how many of these did I have to post to get your attention??

Jim we are going to lose religious freedom if these Sisters lose this case. You know this don’t you? The Sister and all of us are skating on thin ice. If they lose the Sister can always pack up and go to another Mother House (convent) in another country but what about the rest of us? We have lost too and we are still here. Still here with no Little Sister of the Poor and stuck with Obama.

No "case" - there's not even a legitimate reason to be going after them. Quite simply the power of the state is being used to crush a perceived threat to their totalitarian aims. Just more pests to be swatted in order to set a legal precedent they will use to certify the actions they intend to take against enemies to the agenda.

Long ago I watched Richard Pryor do a stand-up routine about male rape in prison (this must have been after he served his time for doing crack).

He said the majority of prison rapists "Don't enjoy it, they just want to see that look on your face". They don't want sex, they want that feeling of power that comes from humiliating and debasing another human being.

I think about that every time I hear about Obama persecuting Christians, heterosexuals, etc. It's not about justice or fairness, it's about humiliation and depravity.

He wants to see that look on everyone's face.

I recall a post here long ago that stated that the purpose of propaganda in the old soviet union was not delivered that people may believe it, but that they would be HUMILIATED by it. I’m too lazy to look for it now but I think this is similar to your post.

There’s no case for ANYONE providing FREE birth control. It’s optional, you pay for it yourself.
