Mr Apple, all the faithful women of the East (Jewish and Christian as well) veil themselves to some extent or cover their hair at least when they are assembled to pray. It is an ancient custom going back unbroken centuries to the teachings of St. Paul, and in fact before St. Paul.

American women wear things just for fashion’s sake, Iranian women may also.

Safety?
Don’t want to be beaten and raped on you way to church by the cultural police.

Hair?
If they have to cover your hair to safely travel to church, their hair is probably messed up.

Honestly, I’m old enough to remember when women covered their hair in the Catholic church. If our sister in Christ covers her hair, why make a fuss over it? She is placing her very life at risk to worship the one an truly God, why bust her hump about covering her hair?

in a country where switching your religion leads to death it is best to blend in. if the women were not wearing there scarves they would draw attention to them selves and that could be fatal.

When I was a kid, it was common for women to wear a sort-of-veil that hung down from their hat, when they went to church. It was left-over from an earlier time I suppose. That all disappeared in the sixties.
