The earliest recorded prayer to Mary, the sub tuum praesidium, is dated in its earliest form to the middle of the 3rd century.

I presume this has been edited by catholics.

As translated in English

WE fly to thy patronage, O holy Mother of God; despise not our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O glorious and blessed Virgin. Amen.

I am familiar with the sub tuum praesidium. My question was about when praying to Mary was first questioned.

When did Christians first start proclaiming that we should NOT pray to Mary? And who were they? Do you have any information on that?
