They tried that after WWII when communists banned Byzantine Catholic religion in Eastern European countries, forced priests and believers to switch over to Russian (KGB) ran Orthodox Church. Those who did not submit were imprisoned, prosecuted and many priests were killed in Gulags, true followers of Christ survived in underground.
