Pray For the Peace of Jerusalem

Corinth was a major commercial hub in the ancient world. That made it a wealthy city, but it also made it a rollicking, sinful, and rowdy city full of idolatry and vice. Naturally, some of this would creep into the nascent Corinthian Church, and became evident even during the Church Services! There were division in leadership, wealthy people were showing off their affluence at the expense of those less fortunate, women were talking and gossiping out loud in the service, The Gifts of the Holy Spirit were being abused, and there were some serious issues of immorality in the congregation that need to be addressed.

Paul needs to discipline the congregation from afar, and so this Letter is the result of that need. Yet, Paul's Salutation is his trademark: Grace and Peace to You!

The members of the oldest of our Christian Communities, some of which date from the days of the Apostles, suffer under cruel, merciless and unrelenting persecution. They are Orthodox and Catholic, Protestant and Evangelical, Coptic, Pentecostal, and Baptist. To the persecutors, we are all "Nazarenes."

Here is another interesting "pun". In the movie "Being There" which you cited, the name of the doctor is "Allenby". That was the same name as the British general who liberated Jerusalem from the Ottoiman Turks. The Arabs laid down their arms and surrendered because "Allenby" sounds like "Prophet of Allah" in Arabic.
