I am no fan of Francis (nor of the Jesuits), but looking at the photo - the cross might have fallen underneath his sash by accident.
I'd make a bigger deal about other things he's actually said (assuming they weren't due to the many mistranslations), than a possible dressing faux pas.

Did you notice in the middle photo that he tucked in both his napkin and his pectoral cross?
