The French government has chosen not to name a new ambassador to the Holy See, after the Vatican declined to accept the nomination of Laurent Stefanini.
The government of France put forward Stefaninis name in January. The Vatican did not formally respond, but after weeks of silence it became evident that the Holy See did not approve the nomination. (Under ordinary diplomatic protocol, a country is not required to accept an ambassador, and no explanation is required.) Nevertheless Francis refused to withdraw Stefaninis name.
Media reports in France suggested that the nomination was not approved because Stefanini is homosexual. But the Stetanini has never identified himself as homosexual causes, nor has he been seen in public with a partner. The reports on his sexual preference apparently were published by political enemies in France.

Nice to see how adults resolve their differences.
Makes me want to run out and take notes and emulate them.
I am just devastated by this news. Not sure how I will sleep tonight.
Good on the Vatican for rejecting France’s childish deliberate insult. The Vatican has no further action to take or difference to settle.
I agree.
Send her to Avignon.
France and Germany will soon be Islamic anyway!
France is as fresh out of moral heroism as it is out of modern military heroism. Note that this situation suggests that Francis, the mistake of the most recent conclave, is, contrary to media reports, quite willing to judge those who mistake the anus for a sexual organ. And, while I am normally critical of his papacy, good for him!
Nevertheless Francis refused to withdraw Stefaninis name.
I think this should read “France.” The donor country withdraws the name, not the recipient head of state.
I certainly agree with you that the pope has no authority to "withdraw" Stefanini's name. That responsibility was that of the nation of France and was not up to the pope.
Sorry no I was quoting the original article.
I probably should have directed my comment to the OP and also put the quotation in italics.
