Pope Francis niece, María Inés Narvaja, thinks she understands her uncles interest in fast-track annulments. Yes, the lawyer in me cautions that Marias attributions of statements to her uncle, then-Abp. Bergoglio, are hearsay, but, were not in a courtroom, were in the blogosphere. Besides what Maria says about the future Francis is illuminating.
Maria recalls that she (or her intended?) applied for an annulment but was told by Argentine Church officials that her case would take four years. She reacted with a young-woman-in-loves pffft! and announced that she would marry civilly. Per María, her uncle endorsed the idea. Maybe, maybe not, thats not the question here. The question is whether Marias (or her intendeds) annulment case would really have taken four years (despite 1983 CIC 1453, setting 18 months as the norm). Personally, I believe her.
I once worked on a marriage case that (fascinating canon-law-of-jurisdiction details omitted) could have been heard in either America or Argentina. Both tribunals turned to Rome for guidance, with the Argentine tribunal asking that the case be heard in the USA! They said their cases take an average of, yes, four years to process. That delay was not necessarily the Argentine Churchs fault; they probably did not have the resources to hear marriage cases more quickly. But it lends support to Marias claim about long delays in Argentine tribunals and that in turn would help explain Francis impatience to fix an obvious pastoral problem.

Divorce is a VERY serious thing, and Jesus Himself said NOT to!! What part of DON’T DO IT does the POPE and Maria not understand??? OMG!!
So, if the author doesn’t believe her, why does he use her statements to make his case?
After divorce, an annulment case is four years At least. It is true
Anyone who thinks that the priests involved are studying that case for that four years or that they need four years is not paying attention
Heck. Let them come back in six months and say no you can’t have an annulment. Then at least the couple can figure something out. But They’re not doing that. The couple or at least one of the former couple who doesn’t have a clue what catholic marriage is is off married outside the church long before any determination is made
In many cases the couple is under the impression perhaps correctly that the annulment is granted after the money is paid
The thing is a farce in most people’s view
What the pope is doing is a mystery but he’s not necessarily wrong in this case
What would Pope Francis say to someone like St. Thomas More about divorce?
The author says he personally believes her. Or am I missing something?
Freegards
The Pope would have him beheaded!
THIS Pope is wrong is ALL CASES, so far!! Divorce is a NO NO.....UNLESS you married a man who is really a woman!! Or your spouse said they want children and then after the wedding, changed their mind......or other examples like this.
Ah.....I just really read you post and you are NOT a Catholic, are you??
Whatever
Why do I bother?
“What God hath joined together...shouldn’t take 4 years to put asunder!!”
I appreciated your post.

:)
No, my bad. I misread.
So, are you a Catholic??? Bet you won’t answer.
Seems like the Church is praying, and hopeful, that within 4 years the Couple will reconsider and work to stay Married
I’m not surprised. Francis takes every opportunity to mock those who strive to obey Church law:
“Specialist of the Logos”
“Ideological Christians”
“Rigid Christians”
“Museum mummy!”
“Asker for certainty in all things”
“Creed-reciting, parrot christian”
“Abstract ideologue”
“Fundamentalist”
“Older people nostalgic for structures and customs which are no longer life-giving in todays world!”
And finally, my all time favorite, which sums up Bergoglio in a nutshell:
“Moralistic quibbler”
Nah, he’d just say he’s stuck in those old (Catholic) ways! That he should get with the times!
