I attended the 2009 Desiring God conference and toward its conclusion was a panel discussion. Marvin Olasky summed it the Servetus issue very well (paraphrased): "We'd all feel better about John Calvin if we could find something which showed remorse about the situation." It was not said to distance himself or the speakers from Calvin but as a simple statement of fact.
I've gotten a lot of valuable insights from Calvin. Like any other human teacher, Calvin's teachings are evaluated through the lens of Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21 and Acts 17:11). However, I've yet to find an explanation provided by anyone about the Servetus situation which I find as totally satisfactory. There is no escaping that the incident is troubling but it doesn't prevent me from learning from Calvin where appropriate.

“summed it” should be “summed up”.

Calvin lived in a time when it was part of their culture that putting to death someone who committed heresy was the will of God.
