It’s astounding that intelligent people don’t see the fallacy of the so called line of successors.

I think it falls apart right at the beginning. The Apostles were missionaries they weren't Bishops. The Apostles founded churches it was the local members of these churches that determined the elders of their churches. The Apostles did not take up permanent residence in a church. It wasn't until the 2nd century, after the Apostolic Era ended, that a centralized structure began to emerge.

And not until Constantine that all authority was centralized in Rome.
