The Cure' of Ars, a highly-regarded Catholic priest of the same era, was also very opposed to drinking, dancing, and card-playing. These can, after all, lead to drunkenness, fornication, and gambling away the grocery money!
I read the church minutes of an ancestor’s church about 1810. People were kicked out of that church for those things plus many others. Two things were for fighting and not attending a district church meeting. They were very strict.
