Why? That was the only way one could read Scripture. No wonder the Roman Catholic church was against him.
Women had been educated in Catholic universities for centuries prior. They were the most educated women inthe world. Read the writings of St. Gertrude (12th century) and St. Catherine of Sienna (a while later, but before ML). They are scholarly.

Women had been educated in Catholic universities for centuries prior. Regardless. The catholic "church" still considered biblical interpretation too important to be left to "laymen" and didn't want anyone other than "clergy" to possess Bibles. They wanted theirs to be the only game in town.
