ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE Pope Francis said Thursday there are limits to freedom of expression, especially when it insults or ridicules someone's faith.[...]
"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."[...]
"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said. "They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit."

Slippery slope, isn’t it?
only for those acting out thier hyped up rage
Who needs context, nuance or precision when the crude head-line grabbing approach conveys exactly what is desired, and to the widest possible audience? He's employing highly effective communication techniques in his "off-the-cuff" interviews and homilies. Clearly he is perfectly capable of nuance when need be (in his interview with La Nacion, for instance). If he were unhappy with the outcome of his chosen style, he could simply consult with his communication experts, including "PR Genius" Greg Burke (formerly of Fox News) and adjust his methods accordingly.
A couple of quotes:
"Francis, who has urged Muslim leaders in particular to speak out against Islamic extremism, went a step further when asked by a French journalist about whether there were limits when freedom of expression meets freedom of religion."
"Francis insisted that it was an "aberration" to kill in the name of God and said religion can never be used to justify violence."
"But recently the Vatican and four prominent French imams issued a joint declaration that denounced the attacks but also urged the media to treat religions with respect."
Was anyone here ever outraged at derisive pictures, or mocking of Christ in our media? Violence is wrong, and not an option, but have any stopped to protest? At least written a letter- the paper kind? Participated in boycotts of sponsors? Anything?
"In the wake of the Paris attacks, the Vatican has sought to downplay reports that it is a potential target for Islamic extremists, saying it is being vigilant but has received no specific threat."
I'm sure a lot of people will be doing the happy dance if Rome gets attacked. I wonder if the remaining Christians will still have the courage to proclaim Christ when the laughter is over and the next target is chosen. Maybe then the hate will stop, differences put aside, and it will be finally recognized that the Catholic Church was not the enemy- the devil is- and we need to fight him together as followers of God.
God bless each and every one of us, and give us the grace to love and forgive as Jesus instructed us to do- especially in times like these!
Were you born with the talent or is it learned? Mind and heart reading, I mean.
All AP must be excerpted and we have to be especially careful not to exceed a sentence or two.
Piers Morgan is a bane to many, especially Conservatives but here he comes up with a pretty good essay:
"If my good friend Dr. Gasparri says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch," Francis said, throwing a pretend punch his way. "It's normal. You cannot provoke. You cannot insult the faith of others. You cannot make fun of the faith of others."[...]
"There are so many people who speak badly about religions or other religions, who make fun of them, who make a game out of the religions of others," he said. "They are provocateurs. And what happens to them is what would happen to Dr. Gasparri if he says a curse word against my mother. There is a limit."

Meanwhile in Mecca, the head Imams all agreed, and, as their only defense of their global slaughter program, pointed to a photo of Pope Francis and chanted all together: "What he said!"
No need for such talents when the evidence lies right in front of us. First, it requires considerable communication skill to rise to Francis' exalted position, and second, he has expert advisors to help him craft his message. It would be naive to assume that his public communiques are devoid of calculation.
I did not see an endorsement, only a caution that it was an expected result. Given the proclivities of Muslims, I could not disagree. Maybe I misread him and will have to revisit it.
You mean like speaking the truth about the fact that all the other religions are false religions? You mean like how the Catholic Church and pre-Vatican II popes spoke of other religions for 1900 years?
Indeed, the Catholic Church had a hate on for the Orthodox faith, so much so they turned the Lithuanians on Novgorod while Ivan I was the ruler.
Normal for the Catholic Church yes.
Good for you and its good to hear from a Catholic on this. Hope more are like you or we are screwed.
Yes, he has a lot to say about what he knows nothing about.
>> I think that the conclave ignored the will of the Holy Spirit when it came to electing this one.
Yeah, Dennis... er, Francis is the only “affirmative action” pope I have experienced in my lifetime — and the worst pope I’m aware of, too.
They are talking about this right now on The Five, Fox news.
Oh, come on.
Nope. One who has a mature faith speaks the Truth. Here’s what Catholic popes have said about the evil cult:
>>Pope Eugene IV, Council of Basel, 1434: there is hope that very many from the abominable sect of Mahomet will be converted to the Catholic faith. http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Councils/ecum17.htm<<
>>Pope Callixtus III: I vow to exalt the true Faith, and to extirpate the diabolical sect of the reprobate and faithless Mahomet [Islam] in the East.<<
>>Pope Pius II - “Turn the anger of the Almighty against the godless Turks and Barbarians who despise Christ the Lord.....In the royal city of the east, they have slain the successor of Constantine and his people, desecrated the temples of the Lord, defiled the noble church of Justinian with their Mohometan abominations. Each success, will only be a stepping stone until he has mastered all the Western Monarchs, overthrow the Christian Faith, and imposed the law of his false prophet on the whole world”<<
>>Pope Leo X - “... the Turks and other infidels ... They treat the way of true light and salvation with complete contempt and totally unyielding blindness ...” <<
>>Pope Clement V, Council of Vienne, 1311-1312: “It is an insult to the holy name and a disgrace to the christian faith that in certain parts of the world subject to christian princes where Saracens live, sometimes apart, sometimes intermingled with Christians, the Saracen priests commonly called Zabazala, in their temples or mosques, in which the Saracens meet to adore the infidel Mahomet, loudly invoke and extol his name each day at certain hours from a high place, in the hearing of both Christians and Saracens and there make public declarations in his honour. There is a place, moreover, where once was buried a certain Saracen whom other Saracens venerate as a saint. A great number of Saracens flock there quite openly from far and near. This brings disrepute on our faith and gives great scandal to the faithful. These practices cannot be tolerated any further without displeasing the divine majesty. We therefore, with the sacred council’s approval, strictly forbid such practices henceforth in christian lands. We enjoin on catholic princes, one and all, who hold sovereignty over the said Saracens and in whose territory these practices occur, and we lay on them a pressing obligation under the divine judgment that, as true Catholics and zealous for the christian faith, they give consideration to the disgrace heaped on both them and other Christians. They are to remove this offence altogether from their territories and take care that their subjects remove it, so that they may thereby attain the reward of eternal happiness. They are to forbid expressly the public invocation of the sacrilegious name of Mahomet. They shall also forbid anyone in their dominions to attempt in future the said pilgrimage or in any way give countenance to it. Those who presume to act otherwise are to be so chastised by the princes for their irreverence, that others may be deterred from such boldness. http://www.papalencyclicals.net/Councils/ecum15.htm<<
