The Presence of God is impossible until their is reconciliation. So faith in Christ as propitiation (atonement) for your own sin is first — a faith that is genuine, founded on the truth of Scripture and evidenced by true repentance and a new heart.
Only then is there promise of the Comforter. But I get the impression we would not agree on that either. It is not a mystical presence to conjure up like some sort of new age spirit guide. The Holy Spirit was the author of Scripture. If you are filled with the Spirit you will love and obey Scripture. It’s meaning will become clear and dear to you. That is test one.
