Obviously, and it all has to do to with the addition BY the Roman Catholic Church of the “filioque” to the original Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed (AD 325 / 381). As soon as the RC Church drops that changed doctrine, we can talk of other things.
Of course, reunification would be absolutely great, but now the question is who will lead that union? There cannot be two Popes.
Very little disagreement in basic theology.
I know it’s a slight difference that’s a really big deal. Still, I think someday they will reach an agreement and they will come together again.
There are Eastern Rite Catholic Churches.
Eastern Rite Catholics do not say “filioque”. This is not an issue.
The biggest issue is staunchly anti-Catholic position of Moscow Patriarchate, and, for different reason, that of the the Mount Athos.
The practices and disciplines do not have to be uniform. So long as fundamental theology is re-unified differences in veneration become just local customs, just like there are saints of local significance not venerated elsewhere.
Probably some kind of council stalemate with the primus inter pares putting the deciding vote
The Orthodox have internal central authority within a church. And they are also stricter on theological changes. Basically change is bad (overly simplistic I know and I do NOT mean it negatively just that they are supremely conservative)
Well coptic catholic are people from an oriental church not orthodox who joined the catholic. And the syro Malabar and syro malankara are from the Assyrian church of the east not orthodox
Note that that is not the main divide. Orthodox patriarchs acknowledged that they understand the addition of the filioque does not impart two sources of the Holy Spirit. Perhaps it would be changed in council as through rather than and. Also eastern catholic churches do not use the filioque
The Pope is the Patriarch of Rome. There is also the Patriarchs of Alexandria (Coptic oriental church) and Constantinople (Orthodox)
I thought it was more the way the filioque was added rather than the addition itself.
OK; I’ll take your word for it. I’m not that familiar with them.
