Pope faces setback over gays and divorcees

Roman Catholic bishops have failed to reach consensus on opening the Church's doors to remarried divorcees and gays after a special synod on the family, in a blow to Pope Francis.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said participants had approved a "re-balanced" final report that took into account the concerns of the most conservative members.

In a final vote on Saturday after two weeks of heated debate, three paragraphs touching on the hot-button issues of a more welcome stance towards gays and divorcees did not receive the two-thirds majority needed.

The vote closed a synod of bishops from around the world which has seen conservatives clash publicly with liberals over a drive spearheaded by the Pope to soften the Church's approach to sinners.

Francis, 77, has called for the Church to take a more merciful approach to unwed mothers, remarried divorcees and gays, famously saying of homosexuals, "Who am I to judge?"

"Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery"

So simple even *I* can understand it.

One should not mistreat the mentally ill. OTOH, one should not be forced to declare a mental illness as normal in order to win their favor.

Said strategy hasn't worked out so well for any of the mainline Protestant denominations which have tried it.

Only a fool would suppose it would work out any differently for the Roman Catholic Church.

I don't think they're implying anything. Not sure about you.

Anyway, the synod is an advisory body, not a legislative body.

My soul magnifies the Lord,
And my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
For He has regarded the low estate of His handmaiden,
For behold, henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.
For He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name. And His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with His arm:
He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
He has put down the mighty from their thrones,
and exalted those of low degree.
He has filled the hungry with good things;
and the rich He has sent empty away.
He has helped His servant Israel, in remembrance of His mercy;
As He spoke to our fathers, to Abraham and to His posterity forever.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen

Magníficat ánima mea Dóminum,
et exsultávit spíritus meus
in Deo salvatóre meo,
quia respéxit humilitátem
ancíllæ suæ.

Ecce enim ex hoc beátam
me dicent omnes generatiónes,
quia fecit mihi magna,
qui potens est,
et sanctum nomen eius,
et misericórdia eius in progénies
et progénies timéntibus eum.
Fecit poténtiam in bráchio suo,
dispérsit supérbos mente cordis sui;
depósuit poténtes de sede
et exaltávit húmiles.
Esuriéntes implévit bonis
et dívites dimísit inánes.
Suscépit Ísrael púerum suum,
recordátus misericórdiæ,
sicut locútus est ad patres nostros,
Ábraham et sémini eius in sæcula.

Glória Patri et Fílio
et Spirítui Sancto.
Sicut erat in princípio,
et nunc et semper,
et in sæcula sæculórum.

Amen.

The headline is implying that Pope Francis wants the Synod to say that adultery and sodomy are not sins. I think this is a complete misunderstanding of what he has said on these topics.

“Blessed are you when men revile you and persecute you and utter all manner of evil against you falsely on my account.”

Actually, most people don’t understand it. According to Jewish law, and therefore the original meaning, adultry is...

“Sexual intercourse of a married woman with any man other than her husband. The crime can be committed only by and with a married woman; for the unlawful intercourse of a married man with an unmarried woman is not technically Adultery in the Jewish law.”

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/articles/865-adultery

So even if you don’t accept divorce, if the man marries a woman who previously was never married, there is no adultery going on, according to the original meaning of the commandment.

Consensus = “My way or the Highway”

A delaying action against evil only. That they would even consider this reminds me of the South Park Papal Convent scene.

“opening the Church’s doors to remarried divorcees and gays”

Couldn’t get past the first paragraph with this little gem of journalistic malpractice.

As a non-Catholic, I don't think the comment "Who am I to judge?" was meant as condoning perversion. He seems to have meant it as though if someone is struggling with homosexual sin, but are trying to be a faithful follower, then we ought to be charitable.

Now maybe I am being too charitable, but that is how I saw the statement. The media, eager to legitimize sinful behavior, seems to have latched on to that statement as an endorsement by the Pope of anti-biblical activity.

Francis, I think, would do well to speak in a bold way against sin while showing, like Jesus did to the adulteress, that the repentant sinner is loved.

We all are sinners. I don't struggle with homosexuality. The sins I struggle with are different. But all sin condemns us.

Anyway, I pray there is a true spiritual awakening in America. We need it. Big time.

“Roman Catholic bishops have failed to reach consensus on opening the Church’s doors to remarried divorcees and gays”

Very stupid remarks. The Catholic Church has always said marriage is a man and a woman and is lifetime commitment. What is so hard to understand about that? The Church has never closed it’s doors to homosexuals. The Church teaches and affirms that the act of homosexuality is a sin and is not to be condoned. The Bible is not changing. Homosexuals know what words are in the Bible. They can go to Mass all they way, and go up for communion as long as they aren’t engaging in the act of homosexuality. Their secular “marriages” with other homosexuals will never be approved by the Catholic Church.

Catholic definition:
Adultery

2380 Adultery refers to marital infidelity. When two partners, of whom at least one is married to another party, have sexual relations - even transient ones - they commit adultery. Christ condemns even adultery of mere desire.171 The sixth commandment and the New Testament forbid adultery absolutely.172 The prophets denounce the gravity of adultery; they see it as an image of the sin of idolatry.173

2381 Adultery is an injustice. He who commits adultery fails in his commitment. He does injury to the sign of the covenant which the marriage bond is, transgresses the rights of the other spouse, and undermines the institution of marriage by breaking the contract on which it is based. He compromises the good of human generation and the welfare of children who need their parents’ stable union

Cardinal Pell from Australia made the same point in an interview a couple days ago. He gets it.

Pope Francis, on the other hand, comes from a country which really has no significant history of 'mainline Protestantism.' Same with a lot of the Italian bishops. I'm not sure they truly understand that caving in to the secular culture is a disastrous strategy. With a lot of them, I think there's just this naive belief that jettisoning unpopular positions will cause people who've left the Church to return. It doesn't work that way.

So the Catholic Church changed the definition from the original. That doesn’t change the commandment. Just like mistranslating “Thou shalt not murder” as “Thou shalt not kill”.

And I understand that not all sins are covered by the 10 commandments.
